My home is my castle. Same goes for the car. My car is my social status symbol. My car is my castle.
With cars, you wear your status on the road. Besides buying a car for status, now people buy (or don’t buy) cars for the image or message it makes. Whether it’s a hybrid or electric, they have become rolling bumper stickers for the environmental movement. Driving one makes a strong statement.
As of the end of 2019 the population of Bulgaria is already under 7 million but the number of cars registered is growing by about 100 thousand cars per year with almost 4 million cars now. This means that roughly every second person owns one. Most Bulgarians drive second-hand cars, nearly half of the fleet is over 20 years old and the cars are mainly diesel.
It’s an object that has become an inseparable part of our society. Cars are “the king of the streets”. While other cities are going greener, give priority to pedestrians and alternative means of transport, we Bulgarians fiercely defend our right to own (and drive) a car. Having one is the real thing.
Cars speak a lot about us as people and society. With the project “My car is my castle”, I embark on a journey through the world of that cult object we can’t live without.
